Open Learning and Formal Credentialing in Higher Education: Curriculum Models and Institutional Policies makes use of the word “credentialing” in its title. Discussions about “credentialing” have been common amongst scholars doing working in relationship to the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Accreditation of Prior Learning (APEL), Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR); and related terms like “advanced standing”, “credit transfer”, “micro-credentialing”. Those working in the field of open learning may not necessarily have access to the history of scholarship that surrounds RPL and APEL.
